Poser 5 released

Curious Labs hasn't added any new features to Poser's "Export to Flash" capabilities, but they have added a slew of new features including Facial Photo-mapping, Strand-based Hair, and Dynamic Cloth.

It's worth checking and seeing how well these new features translate into the Flash format.

2) First let me start by saying that I've been using Poser since version 2 and I'm a huge fan of application. I use it almost everyday. I purchased the pro pack the day it was released and fell in love with it right away. I use it with Lightwave and Cinema 4D. I just want to say that I'm not here to bash C-Labs. I just want to inform those of you that may be thinking about this upgrade. - Buyer's Beware!!!!

I pre-ordered Poser 5 with great anticipation and checked the website almost daily asking myself "Is it out yet? Is it out yet?" - Well long story short it finally WAS released, and I eagerly awaited this little bundle of joy to arrive on my doorstep. One day it finally did arrive. As fast and carefully as I could I unpackaged the contects and Installed P5 onto my Win XP Pro box.

This is where the story goes bad...

Since the install "P5" I've had nothing but trouble. It's buggy, locks up frequently, textures from my poser 4 scenes don't load properly, and today I had a major XP problem and had to reinstall XP via the system repair option by booting with the XP cd-rom and running setup again. (I should also mention that I've had this XP box since March without any problems until loading Poser 5)

A few other things about Poser 5 that I throughly disliked is the fact that even simple scenes take a LONG time to render with the new render engine. Did I forget to mention that it's buggy and locks up constantly??

(probably worth mentioning that I'm running a Athalon 1200 with 786 megs of RAM and have a 128 Meg Nvidia G3 card)- Well above the minimum requirements suggested by C-Labs.

I'm going back to Poser Pro until they fix this. Also there is a lot of content on the bonus CD that can't be found when you click on the links to install them.

To top it all off. I decided to do a uninstall and something really strange occured - most of the content is gone (objects, geometries, etc...) but the EXE and many other program files still exist on my HD. - Weird. And now when I go back to add/remove programs in control panel "POSER 5" is still listed there but clicking on it again just returns an error saying it can't find the uninstall information. Looks like the uninstall needs some work also guys.

Bottom line: Great Ideas, but Bad code!!!

If you're thinking about upgrading I'd wait a little while on this one!!! Stick with Poser Pro for now. It's rock solid and renders MUCH faster!!!

Those of you that have already ordered I would like to hear your experiences with P5 so far. Maybe it's just something qurkey with my system but I doubt it. I also use Lightwave 7.5, Cinema 4D XL 7, and Studio Max - all of which work perfectly fine on my system.

3) Thanks for the Heads up Johnny,

I've been looking to get Poser 5 real soon (have gotten all previous versions and love 'em) but am willing to wait for the patchwork on the latest, now that you have shared with us some of the gory details!

I really do appreciate it thanks.

Lucky

4) ditto arrrrggghhh

5) i purchased the full version of poser 5. i have not used the prior versions. i had one problem which has resolved. one time, when i tried rendering my scene, the pc took the time to render it, however the rendered image never showed up. i restarted poser and the problem was gone. the only other complaint is that it is a little sluggish at times, and depending upon what your doing. by the way, i have a 1.8 GHz P4, 1GB RAM, GeForce 3, etc., and yes, it is still a little sluggish... but, other 3D applications i have used have been sluggish as well. thus far i would rate the product 4 on a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest rating. overall, i am happy with the product.

6) Marc, your system simply shouldn't run it slowly. Poser is famous for producing beautiful quality on low-end machines. I don't understand why you've got this issue. The sys-Reqs are:
500mhz
128mb ram

7) can you make "custom" clothes dynamic too on the poser 5?

8) I recently purchased Poser 4 for a bargain price. I'm no artist and was more or less curious about the product. I wanted to purchase Poser 5 for the import photographs feature. However, Poser 5 was much more expensive than 4 and the above comments steered me away. I like Poser 4 but would like some advice. Should I purchase the Pro Pack or wait until the bugs are worked out of Poser 5 and buy the upgrade? Any opinions would be a great help!

9) oki , first of all.to those of you running Poser 5 om machines with less than 2 megs Ram , forget it, unless you have a lifetime to wait , i dont and i am working on pro base with this app.
Poser has its own cuts' in this early stage but be sure they will fix all of them in time ,its a highlevel tech app .and the profile of users shuld be pro. so slow down in critics ..
home users , stick to Poser 3 & 4

10) I've been using Poser since Poser2, and I currently have Poser4 w/ Por Pack. Regarding what Pierre says, I disagree. I'm a SW Development Mgr. by trade and I am well aware of buggy apps. Software companies have deadlines to meet and will ship buggy products, thats life. But "good" companies always follow up with a service pack to resolve most, if not all of the issues. I'm holding off on purchasing Poser 5 until a service pack comes out.
PS: I'm running a P4 2.4Ghz w/ 512MB RAM and GF2 w/ XP-Pro. Poser 4 works great, render time is about 22 secs for 640x480 all options enabled.

11) Poser 5 has performing like a champ on my dual 400 Mhz (less than minimum requirements) with 386 MB of RAM since day one. I've heard many people complaining that they are having crashes & lockups and others like me have been using it since day one with no problems. I've rendered hair, animated dynamic cloth and haven't had any lockups, pre-ordered it and was one of the first ones to get it. I guess it just depemnds on your system. Curious Labs have released two service patches already so they are working to resolve people's problems. For the ammount of money you can't ask for a better higher end application.
